James R. Sauerwald, PT, DPT, AIB-VRC, brings a wealth of experience and expertise in vestibular assessment and rehabilitation, as well as balance and fall prevention. James approaches orthopedic and structural dysfunction from a neurological perspective, emphasizing the optimization of functional movement patterns through neuromuscular re-education, postural correction, and precision with therapeutic exercise. His treatment repertoire encompasses manual therapy, aquatic therapy, and neurological rehabilitation, with particular expertise in joint mobilization, spinal manipulation, myofascial and instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization, movement-guided release techniques, dynamic/active stretching, as well as proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) or “muscle energy” techniques (traditionally known as agonist or antagonist “contract/relax”).

James’ experience ranges from complex orthopedic reconstruction, to acute and chronic stroke, traumatic brain injury (including mTBI or concussion), spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), as well as more atypical neurological crush injuries involving the brachial plexus and cauda equina syndrome. James offers comprehensive injury prevention strategies, as well as expertise in running/cycling biomechanics and training protocols, and sport-specific rehabilitation programs including golf, tennis, pickleball, running, and cycling.
As a strong and well-rounded clinician, James specializes in various areas of rehabilitation, including the treatment of vertigo and dizziness related to vestibular dysfunction, cervicogenic headache (occipital neuralgia), evidence-based therapeutic exercise, and manual therapy interventions. He is also proficient in aquatic therapeutic exercise techniques, including Bad Ragaz ring techniques and Ai Chi movement patterns (katas). James possesses a deep understanding of the intricate relationships between orthopedic dysfunction, postural abnormalities, and balance impairments. James’s educational background includes a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Florida Gulf Coast University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentrations in Finance and Entrepreneurship, where he graduated summa cum laude from the University of Florida.
In addition to his clinical expertise, James actively pursues professional development and certifications that demonstrate his commitment to excellence. He is certified as a Vestibular Rehabilitation and Concussion Management specialist through the American Institute of Balance. Currently, James is further expanding his knowledge and skills by actively pursuing Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) certification through the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy.
