Sports Medicine

Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession. Athletic trainers are sometimes confused with personal trainers. There is, however, a large difference in the education, skillset, job duties and patients of an athletic trainer and a personal trainer.

An athletic trainer is a certified and licensed health care professional who practices in the field of sports medicine. The athletic training academic curriculum and clinical training follows the medical model. Athletic training has been recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as an allied health care profession. Athletic trainers (ATs) typically render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician.

The responsibilities of the ATC as a physician extender may include the following: injury assessment, injury prevention and patient education, patient scheduling, surgical assistant, communicating with other health care entities, and the rehabilitation of injuries. In many cases, the ATC can simply bridge the gap between the patient’s office visit and formal physical therapy, allowing the patient to begin the rehabilitation process immediately.

Price $25.00 15-minutes one-unit

Therapeutic ultrasound (CPT Code 37035) is a deep heating modality that produces a sound wave of 0.8 to 3.0 Mhz. In the human body, ultrasound has several pronounced effects on biologic tissues. It is attenuated by certain tissues and reflected by bone. Thus, tissues lying immediately next to bone can receive an even greater dosage of ultrasound, as much as 30% more. Because of the increased extensibility ultrasound produces in tissues of high collagen content, combined with the close proximity of joint capsules, tendons, and ligaments to cortical bone where they receive a more intense irradiation, it is an ideal modality for increasing mobility in those tissues with restricted range of motion.

The application of ultrasound is considered medically necessary for patients requiring deep heat to a specific area for reduction of pain, spasm, and joint stiffness, and for the increase of muscle, tendon and ligament flexibility.

Specific indications for the use of ultrasound application include:

– the patient has tightened structures limiting joint motion that require an increase in extensibility; or

– the patient has symptomatic soft tissue calcification.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (CPT Code 97014) often referred to as e-stim, is delivered through a certified athletic trainer who is trained to secure electrode pads to your skin and control the electrical muscle stimulation device, a console that’s either plugged into the wall or battery-operated. This machine generates electric impulses that stimulate your skeletal muscles to contract. Depending on the device’s program setting, the contractions may be barely noticeable, or they may feel, and look, like involuntary twitches. The primary purpose of e-stim therapy is to simulate what happens in the body when you voluntarily contract and release a muscle many times in a row. This process strengthens and repairs tissue, particularly muscles which have become shortened, weakened, or atrophied due to injury or disease.
